Drywall – screws or nails?

Nails versus screws – which one comes out the winner? When drywall initially became available, the installers made use of everything from regular steel nails to galvanized roofing nails. However, after a short while it became apparent that there was a huge problem with nails popping out of the finished drywall.

Nails popping out of the drywall results when the nails are driven into moist wood and as the wood shrinks, the house settles and nails can actually pop out to the walls. Hard to imagine the nail could actually pop out of the drywall as the wood was drying out, but it actually happens. In a situation like that you will have to pull out the drywall hoist if the plates are destroyed, but most of the time it can simply be fixed by replacing the nails with screws.
