What kind of bedding do you use for you ball python, or snakes in general?
Also, is there any reason you prefer that type of bedding than other types?

I live in a pretty dry area so, I use a special substrate mix to help provide more humidity. I mix 70 percent fir bark with 30% peat moss. When this mix is misted with warm water and rotated around, it has good humidity release qualities in my snake’s enclosure. This mix does not get soggy or moldy unless you over mist it. Normally, cypress bed, fir bark, repti-bark or orchid bark all work well with ball pythons and look natural.. Many ball python owners use aspen and that is fine but, aspen does not have any humidity release qualities. Aspen is better for non-tropical and forest species of snakes that do not require higher humidity levels to thrive. Ball pythons do burrow. This mix that I use allows for this natural ball python behavior which is another plus. It almost seems like they enjoy playing in it sometimes.

gerbils like hay to munch on, so i would say aspen because they won’t eat it all before they make a tunnel, you can buy hay or aspen shaving at any local pet store

The trim is white and the carpet is smoke gray. The furniture is all birch. So far I’ve mostly found bedding that has lavender flowers and things of that nature but I would like something more modern. Also, I keep finding bedding that is completely purple or has shades of it-I can’t seem to find any color variation/contrast like is the case with the teal/chocolate sets that are everywhere. I’m thinking of trying a pastel yellow or a green of some sort.

Don’t waste a lot of money dragging home ugly, cheap bed-in-a-bag sets from Linens ‘n Things. Go over to a paint store and get some paint chips in lavender, light yellow and soft green. Then decide what is pleasing to you before hunting for the right combination. There are lots of variations in grey and lavender particularly.

If you decide against the chintzy floral that most people would use, you may want to venture out to Calico Corners or designer fabric store (even Joanne’s) and have bedding made in a 50-60′s geometric fabric utilizing white, grey, lavender and green, and accent pillows and accessories.

Should i spread litter/ and or bedding all over my run and hutch, or just in my litter box.

I use wood shavings in my bunnies litter trays (outside the hutch) however in their hutch (the main compartment) I use hay, a mixture or normal bedding hay and Timothy hay which is an excellent source of fibre and good for the buns teeth.

In the second compartment of the hutch I have another litter tray, again with wood shavings. This is to encourage them to use the tray rather than pee and poo in the hay (though they still do anyway!!). No matter as I change it every day

I also leave a little box of Timothy hay outside the hutch so this is pee and poop free and they can eat until their hearts are content. Hope that helps!

I change it once a week, but every day when I make the bed I always fold the duvet back, so that the bed can air and I use linen spray.
