What is the difference in comforters, duvets, bed spreads, and coverlets/quilts?? i am looking for a new one and idk the difference in all these?
A duvet is a type of bedding — a soft flat bag traditionally filled with down or feathers, or a combination of both and used on a bed as a blanket. Duvets originated in rural Europe and were made from the down feathers of the Eider duck, known for its usefulness as an insulator.
A comforter is a type of blanket. Comforters are intended to keep the user warm, especially during sleep, although they can also be used as mattress pads. Comforters are generally large and rectangular in shape, filled with natural or synthetic insulative material and encased in a shell/covering. Like quilts, comforters are generally used with a set of sheets.
A Bed spread is the same thing.
Comforter and bed spread can be used interchangeably however I tend to view a comforter as something more overstuffed and fuller. A duvet is like a big pillow case. Usually you put a down comforter inside but any spread or comforter will do. You can use duvets as a less expensive way to change your colors. Coverlets and quilts are pretty self explanatory. Quilts tend to be quite country in design where a coverlet is a sleeker more contemporary bed cover.

There’s a lot of melding as far as terminology goes now a days, but basically, here’s a breakdown.
Bedspread: It’s typically thin, unpadded, goes all the way to the floor on three sides and wraps your pillow on the top. Think of hotel bedding (although they don’t all look like that!)
Comforter: Usually hangs down to where the boxspring meets the mattress, is typically padded, although the variance in the filling is pretty wide spread. It usually lays under your pillows.
Coverlet: Sometimes it’s pretty much a nicer word for bedspread, but it can also be not quite as long, more quilty, more like a throw. This is one of those areas that a coverlet, depending on where you shop, could be a plethora of different things.
Duvet: A duvet is typically a down comfortor that requires a cover for it that can be washed.
Quilt: They’re typically stitched, which makes them different, and use a variety of cloths and fabrics to make a pattern, but can also simply be a shorter bedspread. They’re not usually filled or padded.
Hope this helps.
